White Waxy Cap, Hygrophorus eburneus

Basidiomycetes, order: Agaricales, family: Hygrophoraceae

Height to 6"

Cap is up to 4" wide, convex, and becoming flattened with a depressed center. Surface is white or ivory and sticky or slimy when wet. Stalk is fairly thin, white, and slimy like the cap. Gills are attached, descending slightly down the stalk, and white and waxy. Collar is usually not present. Spore print is white. The White Waxy Cap is found in fields or mixed woodlands in northern North America and in California during the fall and winter. It is edible, although the texture may be unappetizing. Also known as the Ivory Waxy Cap.
