Cap is convex, to 3" wide, white along the margin, yellow to brownish toward center, showing some lighter spots. Gills are attached, brown to purple to black. Stalk is white and relatively thin, with some scaling toward the base. The conspicuous collar ring becomes stained purplish-black by falling spores. Spore print is purplish-black. It is often seen growing in cattle pastures where dung piles are present, year-round in the Gulf Coast area. Edibility is questionable, and this mushroom is a known hallucinogen.
