Two-colored Bolete, Boletellus bicolor

Height to 5"

Cap is up to 6" wide, convex, becoming flattened. Surface is dry and rosy-red, turning paler with age. The stalk is thick and short, somewhat thicker near the base, and yellowish above and cap-colored below. The spongy fertile surface of tubes and pores is yellowish. Flesh turns blue upon bruising. Spore print is greenish-brown. Two-colored boletes grow in deciduous woodlands, especially oak, in middle and eastern North America during the summer and fall. The mushroom is edible and very good. Also known as the Red and Yellow Bolete.
