BASIDIOMYCETES: Aphyllophorales, Clavariaceae
Spindle Coral, Clavulinopsis fusiformis
Basidiomycetes, order: Aphyllophorales, family: Clavariaceae
Height to 6"
The Spindle Coral forms thin, erect, fragile, spindle-shaped clubs, somewhat like vertical worms, that are yellow-orange and fuse to a common base. They are often forked or flattened along their length. Spores are produced over the entire spindle surface, and the spore print is white. They grow in grassy areas and mixed woodlands in eastern North America and California during the late summer and fall. Edible but insubstantial.
