The best way I know of to win
an argument is to start by being
in the right.
A reasonable doubt is nothing
more than a doubt for which reasons
can be given. The fact that one or two
men out of 12 differ from the others
does not establish that their
doubts are reasonable.
A great party is not to be brought
down because of a squalid affair
between a woman of easy virtue
and a proven liar.
Law is, of course, in a sense, no more
than a gigantic confidence trick. If
enough people did not obey the law
it would be totally unenforceable.
The moment politics becomes dull,
democracy is in danger.
I do not believe that law can exist
without sanctions.
If the British public fall for this I will
say it will be stark staring bonkers.
