Adam gaped as Izzy’s neighbour appeared next to Izzy at the top of the stairs. That woman was meddling again, just like when she accosted him outside the house.
Nobody had permission to stick their nose in Adam’s business.
Just ask Ruth.
He’d make Louise pay.
He’d make both of them pay.
As Louise and Izzy ran down the landing, Adam hurled himself up the stairs. He’d only gone up the first step when his leg was pulled out from under him.
He flopped on his belly, chin hitting the wood hard. He flipped onto his back and saw the Chinese guy holding onto his leg.
Adam kicked out with his free leg. The blow connected with the other man’s hand, forcing him to release Adam.
Adam scrambled to his feet.
The Chinese guy looked dazed. He backed away as Adam advanced on him, heading back to the front room.
“You should have stayed down,” Adam said as they passed through the doorway.
“Back off.”
The guy backed into the side of the couch. A trickle of blood ran down the side of his head.
“Make me, Jackie Chan.”
“I’m warning you.”
“Come on, tough guy. Come and get me. How’s the family?”
The guy’s eyes flared with anger. “Don’t you dare speak of my family.”
Adam said, “But I love crispy Chinese meat.”
He feinted a punch from the left. When the other man blocked it, Adam stepped in and hit him from the right. The undercut knocked him on his ass. He was definitely out for the count this time.
