T his body of research, copied directly from the accountant's ledgers, spanned the years from 1796 to 1811 and skipped the expedition almost entirely.1

My intent was to digitally photograph the entries in order to save time instead of writing out each one. In that respect, it worked well, however in 2005 the resolution of my camera was pitiful, and some of the entries today are difficult to read. Be that as it may, when I started to photograph the pages I soon realized that I would need to transcribe what I was photographing in order to use the information for publication purposes. This appendix consists of those unedited notes, which I generated while conducting research using the primary source material.

Many of the accountant's books are missing today. While I spent three days at National Archives II, College Park, Maryland, there were other books and ledgers that I could have perused—for instance, the settlement of Governor Lewis's account after his death by orders of the comptroller of the Treasury.2
