For a moment, we seem we have lost her, that show-off we loved so much, the one who always escapes, even in extremis, who flings herself into the void without ever forgetting to salute us first. In an American TV programme a few months after her arrival, she stammers beseechingly: ‘I’d like to be able to rewrite everything. What I have said, what I have done, the way I was dressed… I’d like no one to remember my fishnet stockings, my make-up, the blue eyeshadow… I thought miniskirts were pretty. I would have liked somebody to teach me how to dress in the United States…’
Somebody to teach her. To rewrite her. To absolve her. The little communist bombarded with scores and numbers and words.
