A banner with colorful fabric patches and pom-poms? What’s not to love? Brighten up your girl’s bedroom by hanging this banner over a desk, headboard, or dresser. Or take it a step further and hang a banner around the entire perimeter of her room. Feel free to customize by changing the size of the banner pieces or adjusting the space between the pieces. This is the perfect project for using up those fabric scraps you couldn’t bear to throw away.

Assemble
STEP 1: BANNER PIECES
- A Lay fusible fleece backing pieces on a flat surface, with fusible side facing up; place fabric Banner pieces on top of each fleece piece, with right side facing up. Fuse pieces together, following fusible fleece manufacturer’s instructions.
- B Attach pom-pom fringe to the back of lower edge on each Banner piece, by sewing in place or using hot-glue gun. If using hot glue, let it dry completely before proceeding to the next step.
STEP 2: FINISHING
- A Join the cross-cut binding strips together, following the instructions on page 22. Then press the joined strip into double-fold binding (see page 20).
- B Unfold binding entirely and place on flat surface with right side facing up. Using a ruler, measure in from each end 11 in/28 cm and make a mark with a fabric marker or chalk pencil on the top raw edge. Beginning at mark, working from left to right, place Banner pieces, right side facing up, in order as desired, on binding. Align the binding top raw edge with the top raw edge of the Banner pieces and pin them in place. The Banner pieces should be butted up against each other. (Refer to illustration for “Happy Birthday Banner,” step 2B, page 168.)
- C Sew the Banner pieces to the binding with a 1/2-in/12-mm seam allowance. Trim the seam allowance on the Banner pieces to 1/8 in/3 mm.
- D Fold the binding to the front of the Banner, enclosing all raw edges. Begin at one end and pin the binding’s folded edges together. Then pin the binding to Banner pieces so it covers the stitching made in step 2C; at opposite end of binding, pin folded edges together. Sew the binding 1/8 in/3 mm from folded edge, the entire length of the Banner. Press.
- E Knot each end of the binding, and hang the Banner in a special spot in your girl’s bedroom.
