Anisa implored sleep to stay away, for her husband was lying in the next room in his winding sheet ready for burial in a hole in the ground and he needed someone to keep him company during this long and lonely night. But sleep did not heed her call and became a dark sea from which there was no escape. In her sleep Anisa saw her husband lying on top of a woman sprawled on the ground, and she was astonished and felt as though she were burning. She imagined she knew that woman, who, with closed eyes, had surrendered to a man whose face was not able to hide its revulsion. She was angry to be cheated on, and opened her eyes as wide as she could, holding tightly to her husband in spite of his revulsion. Her flesh became a hot, moist mouth with quivering lips asking for cold water which it did not receive. Anisa saw in her sleep that she was screaming for help in a room with no door and no windows. She was being raped by a man whose face could not be seen and who was saying to her with a rasp in his voice that he was going to kill her. He did not say he loved her, and her forced screaming persisted until she suffocated.
