There is no shortage of designers’ initiatives that try to fix humanitarian crises, alleviate social injustices, or fight political paralysis. This next section is but a small inventory of individual and collective attempts to “do something.” Some actions are analog and scrappy, while others are rooted in academic inquiry. It’s quite a display of ingenuity, from Mike Davis, who designed and distributed “Refugees Welcome” stickers, to Carol Overby, who teaches financial literacy to counter her students’ perception that poor people are poor because they are lazy. Topics include saluting the contribution of minority designers, developing empathy for homeless people, or improving on the accessibility and usability of everyday objects.
