This project sees the classic JÄRA lampshade wrapped in a length of subtle, leafy fabric. A different patterned or plain fabric could be used, depending on the color scheme of your bedroom.

SCISSORS
LOW-TACK ADHESIVE SPRAY

TIME: 1 HR
DIFFICULTY: BASIC
HACK HINT: If the fabric you have chosen has a directional pattern, ensure it is facing the right way before you begin to mark and cut out your lampshade shape.
HACK HINT: When you roll the fabric around the shade, try to start the fabric rolling process at the same point as the join in your uncovered shade. That way the fabric join will sit in the same place, and only one join will be visible when the lamp is on.
INSTRUCTIONS
1 This lampshade is slightly cone shaped (as opposed to straight) so you will need a curved piece of material to cover it. To work out the shape, lay your fabric out on a clean, flat surface, right side down, and place your lampshade on top of it. Then, using a pencil, start to roll the lampshade along, while at the same time drawing a line alongside the rolling shade onto the fabric.
2 Starting at the bottom, draw a line one way, and then change direction and draw a line the other way, this time in line with the top edge. Make sure you roll the lampshade in one continuous movement each way, without lifting or moving the lampshade up or down. You will end up with two lines on your fabric.
3 Now you are ready to cut your fabric. Using your drawn lines as a guide, begin cutting your fabric, leaving an allowance of ⅜ inch (1 cm) on either side of the lines at the top and bottom. This excess fabric will be folded into the shade to give you a neat edge.
4 Once your fabric is cut out, you are ready to cover your shade with it. Lay the fabric out flat (right side down) and spray evenly with low-tack adhesive spray.
5 Place the shade onto the fabric—line up the top and bottom with your pencil lines—and then roll the shade along the fabric, keeping it in line with your drawn lines. Adjust the fabric as you roll (if necessary) to ensure that there is an even amount of excess fabric at the top and bottom of the shade.
6 Once the fabric is wrapped and secured with the low-tack adhesive, you can apply fabric glue to the rim of the shade and begin to fold the excess fabric into the rim. Do this at the top and the bottom.
7 Once all your fabric is folded in and secured, trim away any excess fabric you may have at your join area.
8 Apply a line of fabric glue along the bottom side of the join. Fold the top piece of fabric over, apply fabric glue to the underside of the fold, and then press together to secure the folded join in place. Allow the lampshade to dry.
