* Quoted in Holler, Ihr Kampf, p. 125. On pp. 123–6 Holler gives a detailed description of the arrest. Not surprisingly, Mattachich’s account of the event (Memoiren, p. 41) is full of uncontrollable bitterness. Of Fiedler and Tonkovich’s contribution he writes: ‘They tried to consolidate my trust in them with their so-called good advice and their false concern for my welfare, with the diabolical intention of luring me into the net they had prepared beforehand. Should anybody ask me today for an example of complete turpitude [Niederträchlichkeit], I would answer: the role that Fiedler and Tonkovich played then. And both today enjoy the privileges of respectable gentlemen!’
