* Ozegovich stated on oath before one of these courts of appeal that he had never doubted Mattachich’s guilt. Keglevich, Mattachich’s ex-adoptive-father, did his bit by telling the investigators that more than once he had had to settle debts his stepson had incurred without having the means or the intention of repaying them. A hitherto unknown couple, Bog by name, came forward to reveal that they were still waiting for Mattachich to repay a substantial loan they had made to him five years before. His wretched attempts to swindle out of their wages some of the servants he had hired in Paris and Meran were also put before the courts (see Chapter 5 of this volume and documents quoted in Holler, Ihr Kampf, pp. 55–6, 118, 180).
