“What do you mean she died? You just told us a little while ago that she was doing okay,” Margaret cried, her voice becoming louder and louder. "You're the Medical College of Virginia, right, Beau?"' she said as she reached for her husband’s hand. “You perform miracles and now you’re telling me my friend is dead.”
Beau reached for Margaret and hugged her, stroking her back in an attempt to comfort her. Offering comfort and emotional support is not Beau Massey's strong point so he looked over at Kathryn Lee with wild eyes that screamed “help me.”
Kathryn moved next to Margaret, looked into her eyes and said, "Let’s go get some coffee, Margaret, and let the doctor talk with Stuart and Adam about the next steps. I'd like a piece of that apple pie I saw earlier downstairs in the bakery on the first floor."
Margaret nodded through her tears and Kathryn walked her slowly, like a child, to the elevator. As the elevator door closed, Margaret said in a defiant voice, "There's something wrong with all of this, Kathryn. I think someone hurt her on purpose," she blurted.
Kathryn nodded and said slowly, "Well, if they did, I can promise you we'll get to the bottom of it. You know how Adam is — he'll put every single resource the government has on it until he gets the answer."
"Good," Margaret said. "And, if there's anything Adam can’t do, I'm sure Beau can," she added. "Camilla has been our friend for years and we're really going to miss her," she said softly as she wiped a tear from her eye.
Kathryn put her arm around Margaret as the elevator descended to the first floor. “Yes, we’ll miss her beyond words. She was a dear and the best Bridge partner I ever had.”
