Why pay more to buy a giant hero when you can put together your own and tailor it to taste? Whether you call it a hero, sub, hoogie, or grinder, this toothsome sandwich is sure to be a crowd pleaser.

1 Split bread horizontally in half. Remove enough of the soft center from each half to make 1-inch shell. (Reserve soft bread for another use.)

2 Brush vinaigrette evenly over cut sides of bread. Layer meats and cheese on bottom half of bread. Top with additional ingredients of your choice. Replace top half of bread. If not serving right away, wrap sandwich in foil and refrigerate up to 4 hours. Cut in 12 pieces.

POTLUCK PREP Transport uncut wrapped hero on a baking sheet for support. If transporting it any distance, carry in a cooler, cutting it in half, if necessary, and rewrapping it. Cut into serving pieces at the potluck.
