Acknowledgments

Many thanks to the following people who helped shape The Bones Remember.

First to my agent, Natalie Lakosil of Bradford Literary Agency, who loves the Alexa Glock series and led me to the great Poisoned Pen Press/Sourcebooks team. My editor, Barbara Peters, provides astute guidance and loves New Zealand. Diane DiBiase, managing editor, and Beth Deveny, assistant content editor, are quick to respond, support, and guide.

The Bones Remember is a better book because of my writing group. A heartfelt thank you to our leader, Nancy Peacock, and my fellow writers, Lisa Bobst, Denise Cline, Linda Janssen, Mirinda Kossoff, and Ann Parrent.

Researching great white sharks was fascinating. Thank you to shark expert Warrick Lyon of New Zealand’s National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research for graciously checking my facts and sharing his tale of spotting “eleven white sharks in one spot in Stewart Island in one day.” NIWA scientists are working to protect the white sharks by reducing fishing mortality.

The Department of Conservation rangers on Stewart Island are passionate about their work. Ranger Tanya Dann of Rakiura National Park Visitor Center was kind to answer my questions.

My brother, Ben LeFever, who knows weaponry, patiently answered my questions.

Triangle Sisters (and Misters) in Crime and the North Carolina Writers’ network provided support and fellowship.

Some of the places in The Bones Remember are real and some are made up. All the mistakes are real and mine alone.

The Bones Remember exists because my husband one day said, “How would you like to live in New Zealand for a year?” Thank you, Forrest, for that and for being my best friend and best editor.
