About the Author
Capt. Jerry M. Linenger, M.D., Ph.D., is a
retired U.S. Navy flight surgeon and NASAastronaut. A naval academy graduate. Dr.Linenger holds a doctorate in epidemiology, amaster's in systems management, and a mas-ter's in public health policy. He has also beenawarded three honorary doctorate degrees inscience. During his mission aboard Mir, helogged fifty million miles in more than twothousand Earth orbits. He was the firstAmerican to undock from the space station inSoyuz spacecraft and the first American tospacewalk wearing a Russian spacesuit out-side a foreign craft. At the completion of hismission, he had spent more continuous timein space than any male American.
