I walked out of the cell later that day hand in hand with my love. But that didn’t mean I was free. I still had to repent for my sins, according to Eva. And then I had to prove to all the supernatural creatures that I was no longer a threat.
The truth was Darcy really had changed my view of the world. He had taken away all the anger and rage and resentment I felt towards Eva, my parents, him, and my existence. He had illuminated the person I truly was destined to be. That girl was no longer hidden.
I stood before the Queen of all paranormal creatures with my head bowed and my knee bent.
Just a day ago, I would have scoffed at this image. It was funny how fast things had changed. As I spoke the words now to Eva and Ash, who was always by her side, I truly meant every word.
“I’m sorry for the hurt I have caused and the pain I have inflicted upon my fellow creatures because of my own personal vendetta. I will accept whatever punishment you see fit for my crimes.” I didn’t make eye contact with Eva, the queen, as was customary.
“Please stand and raise your head, Emma,” said Eva.
I paused, not expecting this. I expected her to punish me then and there, chop off my head or something. I did as she asked and stood. I raised my head and looked up at her. Eva stood on the dais in her red velvet cape and riding wear. My father would flip out over her chosen outfit. I almost smirked. She was a warrior queen, and that would never change. Gone were the days of traditional values and big puffy dresses.
“If what you are saying is true, and you mean every word, then I sentence you to a lifetime of serving and protecting your fellow people.”
I blinked. A lifetime of servitude? What did she mean? She wasn’t done, so I let her finish.
“You are to help Darcy in protecting the veil between the two worlds and the lives of the supernatural creatures. You are not to kill or attempt to harm anyone. Is that agreeable?”
I nodded, “Yes, Your Majesty.”
Eva smiled. “You do not need to call me that, Emma. You’re my family. Eva is fine.”
I smiled. I was more than okay with that.
