This practice would come to light again in 2001 when, later disgraced and jailed media mogul, Conrad Black worked to finagle himself a peerage, but Prime Minister Chrétien refused to allow him to accept it as it violated the law and practice as Mackenzie King had re-established it. Black opted to surrender his Canadian citizenship to become Lord Black of Crossharbour.
