CHAPTER 18

Charlie

A road trip in a minivan is a lot more fun that I would have thought. Even with a trunk full of boxes of diapers. Lance drives and I sit in the front seat, a bag of candied ginger on my lap.

“Almost home,” Lance says, turning into my neighborhood. We’ve decided to move in together. I love my home, and so does Lance. I’ve already made plans to transform my office into a nursery. Lance has a big honey-do list to work on the next few months. The first priority: adding places to my bed frame where he can secure rope. Lance is most excited about that project.

“Home, sweet home.” Lance slows the car as we approach my house.

“What the…” My mouth drops open. My house looks…different. For one thing, there are baby blue and pink streamers covering the roof. Channing and Deke are up there, tying enough balloons to the chimney to make it float away.

Rafe’s on the ground, hand shading his eyes. I can’t hear but I can tell he’s shouting up orders. Next to him, taking up most of the lawn, is a giant inflatable thing—the sort you see at Halloween. Only this is a baby blue teddy bear. Its head is up near the roof. Channing looks like he wants to jump on it.

My front door opens and my friends pour out. Sadie carries more balloons, puffy gold ones that spell ‘BABY’. She sees us and waves, bouncing up on her ballet flats while Tabitha and Adele turn to look up at Channing, who’s pretending he’s going to leap from the roof onto the inflated bear. Tabitha laughs but Adele shakes her head, putting her hands on her hips. Now Channing’s getting chewed out by both Rafe and Adele.

“Looks like someone planned a surprise baby shower.” I twist towards Lance. “Did you plan this?”

“Nope.” He grimaces. “You want me to take you back to Arizona?”

“Nope. I can deal. I like surprises.” I put a hand on his knee. “Especially when I’m with you.”

“Damn straight.” He leans over to kiss me.

I pretend to draw away. “Think of the children,” I say in a fake-shocked voice, glancing into the backseat. I buckled the baby doll in the infant car seat, promising Lance I’ll tell everyone it’s mine. I may have practiced putting a diaper on it myself, though Mom tells me it’s a lot different diapering a living, squirming child.

“They’d better get used to it,” Lance growls and cups the back of my neck. His kiss is long and deep and sets my pussy tingling—until someone honks a horn. I jerk back, and Lance glares out at our friends. Rafe has his arms crossed but he’s smiling. Tabitha’s leaning into her bright yellow VW bug. She’s the one honking the horn.

“My friends are nuts.” I shake my head.

“My pack is worse,” Lance counters. He parks and hops out, jogging around to my door and opening it for me. The sight of his sexy self, framed in the door of a clumsy minivan, is enough to make my panties wet. His smirk says he knows it. “Last chance, angel. We can ditch these guys; hit the road.”

“Nope, I’m done running.”

“Then let’s do this. Ready?” He holds out his hand.

“Ready.” I take it and we walk together up my drive, to our future with friends and packmates, and the love we’ll share for the rest of our lives.
