Kitchen Hygiene

Mom was busily preparing all the meats for the BBQ, soaking them in bowls of her special marinade and putting cling-wrap overtop until it was time to barbecue them. Molly and Sam watched as she then washed all the knives and plates that’d had raw meat on them with dish soap and very hot water.

Next, Mom wiped down the countertops with disinfectant spray so she could make all the salads on a clean, bacteria-free surface. Molly wanted to be closer to Mom, so she and Sam flew down and landed on one of the freshly cling-wrapped bowls… the one that contained Mom’s prized marinated meat chunks!

“Aahhh!!” a high-pitched, frenzied scream rang out as Mom caught sight of the two flies sitting over her beautiful marinated meat! Dad heard the scream all the way out in the garage and quickly rushed into the kitchen.

But six-year-old Jack didn’t hear the scream; he was upstairs in his bedroom, plugged into his favorite music of the week and laughing to himself as he read a new comic.

“What’s going on?” Dad asked, still wearing his very loud, fluorescent orange and pink polishing gloves. Mom beckoned him to be quiet, placing a finger softly onto her lips. With the other hand, she pointed to the flies on the cling-wrap over her beloved BBQ meat.
