¹⁰¹ Henry Cecil Kennedy Wyld (1870–1945) was a Fellow of Merton College and the Merton Professor of English Literature 1920–47. One of the books used at this time for the study of English was Wyld’s A Short History of English (1921) which Jack found a very muddled piece of writing and of which he complained often.
