²⁰ The proofs were of photographs of Mr Lewis taken with his sons. On Friday 16 November Jack sent the following telegraph to his father: ‘Orders France. Reporting Southampton 4 p.m. Saty. If coming, wire immediately. No need alarm. Shall be at base. Jack.’ Jack Lewis, having been commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant, was suddenly transferred from the 3rd to the 1st Battalion of the Somerset Light Infantry and he crossed to France on 17 November.
