²⁹ Mrs Lily Hamilton Suffern (1860–1934) was the sister of Jack’s and Warren’s mother. Warren described her as ‘an ardent suffragette’ who had quarrelled with everyone in her family, including his parents. Although the lady was constantly on the move, she was especially fond of Jack whom she bombarded with books and a pseudo-metaphysical correspondence.
