I hope you enjoyed Betrayal at the Border, my seventh Zachary Blake Legal Thriller series novel. The novel depicts the social justice struggles of two distinct immigrant populations who escape tyranny to seek a better life in a divided America.
In 2001, the DREAM Act was introduced for the first time. Its goal was to prevent undocumented children from being punished for the acts of their parents. The bill passed the House and was defeated in the Senate. In 2005, Senators Ted Kennedy and John McCain sponsored the Secure America and Orderly Immigration Act. The same two senators sponsored the Comprehensive Immigration Reform Act of 2006 and the Secure Borders, Economic Opportunity, and Immigration Reform Act of 2007. All three bills died in committee.
These failures have emboldened state sponsored anti-immigration efforts, most of which have been previously declared unconstitutional. President Obama’s DACA law, the pathway to citizenship, and the Immigration Modernization Act of 2013 all passed the Senate but failed in the House. A Texas judge recently issued a decision that casts doubt on the future viability of DACA. Hundreds of immigrants now await a future ruling from the United States Supreme Court or hang on to scant hope that a divided Congress will pass a bill.
America is a nation of immigrants. Many of us are the children or grandchildren of immigrants who have realized the American dream. Isn’t it time we put aside our fears, biases, and prejudices and welcome others who wish to realize that same dream?
President Biden believes we are in a battle for the soul of our nation. Have we given in to our worse tendencies? Have we become a country that has already lost its soul? We can do better; we can be better. Only together can we become one nation, with liberty and justice for all. Will you be part of the problem or part of the solution?
