When Lauren and Nya still weren’t home the next morning Breeze wondered what the hell was going on. It wasn’t like Lauren to leave without notice. Breeze called her grandmother to see if she had heard from Lauren lately.
“She went to visit Linda for Christmas. She said you didn’t wanna go because you were with your little boyfriend. Who are you seeing?” her grandmother asked.
“Just a guy from school,” Breeze lied.
“Well, you should be with your family for the holidays. Lauren didn’t tell you that she was going out of town?”
“I think she mentioned it. I musta forgot. I’ll call you later Granny.”
Breeze hung up before her grandmother could say anything else. She couldn’t believe that Lauren had left the state without a word but fuck it. She didn’t want to be bothered with her ass anyway.
Breeze showered, got dressed and called Dior to see if she wanted to hit the mall with her for some last minute Christmas sales.

Dior looked over at her phone vibrating on the nightstand then at the window. It was bright and sunny and she knew that her mother had to have been home by now. She looked at Brian and then climbed out of bed. She went down the hall to her mother’s bedroom and slowly cracked the door. Donna was fast asleep. Dior sighed and headed back to her bedroom where she found a note on her door.
Dior, I got tonight off, but I have to work a double shift tomorrow so I want to spend the day with you. I hope you didn’t have any serious plans. And we need to talk about Brian staying the night.
Dior folded the note and went back into her bedroom.
“Yo’ mama here?” Brian asked as he rubbed his eyes.
“Yeah.” Dior nodded as she picked her phone up from the nightstand.
“I betta get out of here,” he said as he climbed out of the bed. “You still comin’ over later?” he asked as he put his clothes back on.
“Nah. My mama got the day off, so I’m gon’ hang wit’ her.”
“That’s cool. I’ll talk to you later then,” he said before he kissed her cheek.
Once Brian had left, Dior called Breeze back and told her that she wouldn’t be able to go shopping with her. She also told her about the note that Donna had left on her door.
“If she didn’t beat yo’ ass outta yo’ sleep you cool,” Breeze assured her friend. “But speaking of parents, Lauren took her ass to Florida and ain’t even tell me.”
“You haven’t really been around,” Dior reminded her.
“Whatever. She could have told me, but fuck her. I’m glad she ain’t here,” Breeze lied. She wasn’t looking forward to spending Christmas Eve alone.
“Come over and kick it wit’ us,” Dior said, feeling bad for her friend. She wondered why Primo had ditched her, but she didn’t bring it up.
“Maybe.”
“Come on. You know you don’t wanna be alone,” Dior told her friend.
“Aiight,” Breeze said before she hung up.
