Chapter 49

“How’s Nya?” Breeze asked as she and Dior sat down for lunch.

“Good. Her lil’ butt gon’ be in a play at school. I told her I’d come since yo’ mama gotta work. You should come, too.”

“Yeah. I didn’t think I’d miss her bad ass but I do,” Breeze admitted. She hadn’t seen her mother or her sister in months.

“You don’t go over or call?” Dior asked as she studied the menu.

“Naw. After that bullshit Lauren pulled when I was movin’ out I’m good on her ass. Since she got Miss Ruby to babysit I’d have to deal wit’ one of them and that’s a no go,” Breeze said before she laughed.

Miss Ruby lived next door to Lauren and she was a nice older lady, but damn was she annoying. She’d talk your ears off and still keep talking.

“Well, come to the play,” Dior said as their waitress approached them.

Dior ordered some ribs, French fries and a Pepsi. Breeze ordered a salad and a Long Island iced tea, feeling grown up.

“Can I see your ID?” the waitress asked.

Breeze produced an ID and the waitress smiled and gave it back.

“You got a fake ID?” Dior asked once the waitress was out of earshot.

“Yeah. Primo took me to get it after he bought me the car.”

Dior just nodded. Not only had he bought her a car and a fake driver’s license, Primo had also taught Breeze how to drive.

Breeze was so different now that she was with Primo. Besides him seeming a little bit controlling, Dior felt that he was good for Breeze. He made her stay in school and he took care of her. She had never seen her friend smile so much and she was genuinely happy for her.

“What’s wrong?” Breeze asked as Dior picked over her food.

“Ummm nothin’,” she lied.

“Yeah right. Spill the beans,” Breeze insisted.

“I think...” Dior paused.

She didn’t even want to say it out loud. She knew that she had messed up big time.

“What?” Breeze asked impatiently.

“Uugghh.” Dior groaned as she looked at the table. “I think I’m pregnant,” she said quickly.

“What? You ain’t been usin’ the condoms I got you?” Breeze joked.

“Just a few times we didn’t,” Dior said as she shook her head.

“You took a test?”

“No. I don’t even wanna know.”

“Stop bein’ dramatic and take a test.”

They finished eating then went to buy a pregnancy test at the first store they saw that looked like it carried them. Dior bought two tests just in case, and they went to Breeze and Primo’s house. Dior wasn’t going to go home and use the tests and she didn’t want to do it in a public bathroom.

She was in awe of the nice house as Breeze pulled into the driveway, then the garage. Her friend had been living with Primo for a while now but Dior had never been to their house.

“The bathroom is down the hall on the right,” Breeze said as she let Cash out of his carrier.

Dior read the directions for the test and followed them precisely. She waited for the results and almost cried when she saw them. She used the second test and got the same results.

“My mama gon’ kill me,” she said as she joined Breeze in the living room.  She slumped down onto the couch.

“No she won’t. She’ll be mad for a minute, but Donna gon’ be there for you,” Breeze said confidently.

“I can’t believe it,” Dior said, feeling disappointed in herself.

“How far along you think you are?” Breeze asked.

“I don’t know. A month or so.”

“When you gon’ tell Brian?”

“I don’t know.”

Breeze was asking too many damned questions. Dior didn’t know what the hell she was going to do with a baby. Breeze could see that her friend was getting agitated so she stopped asking questions. She knew that Dior wasn’t happy about being pregnant, but she also knew that she wouldn’t have an abortion. She didn’t believe in it.

Breeze also knew that Dior would be a good mother because Donna had been a good mother to her. She couldn’t have gotten pregnant by anyone better than Brian’s lame ass either. Once she got over the initial shock of it all Dior would be all right.
