Belinda and Dior went into the room together and slowly approached the only bed in the room.
“He isn’t in great condition, but I am hopeful that he’ll pull through. However...” Doctor Sanjay paused, causing both of the women’s hearts to drop.
“What?” Dior asked as she took Brian’s limp hand into her own. He was still under anesthesia from the surgery and appeared to be sleeping.
“He had a thoracic spinal cord injury between his t9 and t12 vertebra. There’s a good chance that he’s at least partially paralyzed, which in and of itself isn’t all bad,” he said as if it pained him.
“What?” Belinda asked as she clutched her chest. “He’s too young,” she sobbed as she fell into a chair.
“Since it doesn’t look like a complete paralysis, meaning that his brain is still able to send messages to his spinal cord, he’ll still have some sensations and movements. This means that his paralysis could be temporary or it could be permanent. We did all that we could, now we wait,” he said before he left the room.
Belinda and Dior sat in silence for hours. Neither of them knew what to say or how to console one another. This had been so sudden and unexpected.
Dior didn’t want to leave Brian’s side, but as it got later she was informed that only his mother would be allowed to stay the night.
“Come on. Let’s go and get showered. We’ll be back first thing in the morning,” Donna said as she wrapped her arms around her daughter’s shoulders. She felt so bad about what had happened to Brian, but she was secretly grateful that her only child was physically uninjured.
Emotionally she knew that things would be hard for Dior. Brian was her first love and there’s nothing like your first love. She felt bad for Belinda and Brian but she thanked God that Dior was all right.
