On 20 May two large warships, strongly escorted, were seen at 1500 steaming northward out of the Kattegat. The Naval Attaché2 at Stockholm got the news and at 2100 that night sent it to the Admiralty. A reconnaissance plane flying over Bergen reported in one of the fjords3 there at 1330/21 two Hipper class cruisers, one of which was later identified by its photograph as the Bismarck. The intelligence went out at once to the fleet.
