The 1980s brought many memorable things: the “Thriller” video, Miami Vice, and, of course, Big Hair, but nothing better than wine coolers. The ones that came in a box were a nice way to charge five bucks for fifty cents’ worth of ingredients. I find you can do a whole lot better cost-wise and flavor-wise if you make your own. When she tried this, even Miss I’m-Not-Into-Alcohol Carla said, “Oh, I love it!”
2 cups strawberries, plus extra for garnish
cup sugar
1 bottle of dry white wine
Crushed ice Ginger ale
1. In a bowl, combine the strawberries and sugar and let sit for 10 minutes. In a blender, puree the strawberry mixture with wine until smooth and pour through a fine sieve into a pitcher.
2. Wine cooler may be made 4 hours ahead and refrigerated. Serve chilled over ice, and top with ginger ale and strawberries.
