The following pages offer a step-by-step guide to creating a wood engraving. The type of wood and tools differ with wood engraving, but the steps are similar to those used in relief printing for woodcut. Often it is easier to learn a process if you follow a pictorial sequence. Once you have the block prepared (see Making Engraving blocks in Chapter 1), there are three basic stages to making a wood engraving:
A. Make a drawing and transfer it to your block.
( Remember, it will print backwards.)
B. Engrave your image by cutting away all the areas you don’t want to print.
C. Print your image: ink your block and impress it onto a piece of paper.
