Here is how to make a tessellated linocut. A tessellation is a mosaic image that fits together like a puzzle. The artist M.C. Escher (1898– 1972) made the technique famous with his prints, but the technique in mathematics dates back to the 17th century. This is a good exercise to explore pattern and positive and negative space. As in the previous exercise, there are three stages:
A. Make a drawing and transfer it to your block.
(Remember, it will print backwards.)
B. Carve your image by cutting away all the areas you don’t want to print.
C. Print your image: ink your block and impress it onto a piece of paper.
