The “culture” pearls in The Newfoundland Tongue were collected over many years. The tongues off which some words and phrases slid have been stilled, leaving words alive in new voices. Here and there a word or phrase not often used has caught my ear and held on.
Thanks to all those who contributed a word, a phrase, etc., in earnest or off-handedly, people such as Charlotte and (the late) Gordon Caines, Alf Doyle, Vaughan Harbin, Woodrow Hedd, Greta Hussey, Raymond Hutchings, Gary Kennedy, George Kennedy, Lillian and (the late) Clayton Kennedy, Marie (Maime) Caines-Koker, Dr. Adrian Lear, Hilda Murray, Emmie Penny, Mona Petten, Maud Pinsent, Professor J. Cecil Reynolds (correspondence February 14, 1983), Cyril Strowbridge, Gertie and (the late) Solomon Strowbridge, Janalee Strowbridge Perrett, (the late) Faye Styles, and D. Jean Young.
A special acknowledgement of (the late) Dr. Doris Saunders, founding editor of Them Days: Stories of Early Labrador. Thanks to Linda Davis, administrator, Them Days. Appreciation to the staff of Pasadena Public Library and to the staff of Corner Brook Public Library for research material and assistance. Thanks also to Lillian Simmons of the Compass for her assistance.
And always, my appreciation to Flanker Press staff and to publishers Garry and Margo Cranford, whose enthusiasm and energy provide a successful outlet for my all-consuming work.
