The old saying goes that dog is man’s best friend, and we have to admit, sometimes that’s true in the comic book world. But other times, superheroes’ buddies are a little more unique—monkeys, aliens, dinosaurs…
Streak the Wonder Dog (Green Lantern #33, February 1948). Streak was a German shepherd who was the sidekick to the original Green Lantern. He actually became so popular that he began starring on the cover of the comic without Green Lantern.
Krypto (Adventure Comics #210, March 1955). Most likely created in response to the popularity of dog characters like Rin-Tin-Tin and Lassie as well as Superboy’s pet dog, Krypto debuted in 1955. Little did readers know that this would spark a flurry of superpets. Decades later, Krypto even received his own cartoon series!
Ace the Bat-Hound (Batman #92, June 1955). Great minds think alike! The small amount of time between Krypto’s debut and Ace’s debut likely suggests that it was a coincidence rather than one being inspired by the other. You have to love the idea of giving a dog a mask, because, you know, people might recognize him.
Streaky the Super-Cat (Action Comics #261, February 1960). Streaky was a normal Earth cat who was transformed into a supercat by a rare form of kryptonite. She was Supergirl’s pet and sidekick.
Comet the Super-Horse (Action Comics #292, September 1962). Comet the Super-Horse has the weirdest origin of any of the pets on this list. He was born a centaur in ancient Greece, but the witch Circe offered him a chance to become entirely human. Unfortunately, the potion she gave him backfired and he instead became a horse. To make it up to him, she gave him immortality and superpowers. Centuries later, he met Supergirl and became her pet and sidekick. Weird, but it got weirder. On a mission in outer space with Supergirl, a magic spell was cast on Comet so that whenever a comet was in the solar system he was inhabiting, he would be transformed into a human. During one of these transformations, he took on the form of a cowboy…and Supergirl fell in love with him. Thankfully, this was never addressed again, and readers were spared from potential interspecies relations.
Zabu (X-Men #10, March 1965). Zabu is a saber-toothed tiger who is a pet and sidekick to the Marvel jungle adventurer Ka-Zar. They live together with Ka-Zar’s wife in the mysterious hidden continent known as the Savage Land.
Redwing (Captain America #117, September 1969). Redwing is the pet and sidekick to the Falcon, who was the partner of Captain America for a number of years. Redwing is telepathically connected to the Falcon, and eventually the Falcon realizes that he can actually see through Redwing’s eyes.
Lockheed (Uncanny X-Men #166, February 1983). On a mission in outer space, Kitty Pryde saves a small purple alien from harm. The two quickly form a bond with each other, and Lockheed chooses to return to Earth with Kitty.
Old Lace (Runaways #2, August 2003). When a group of teenagers discover that their parents are actually supervillains, they decide to run away from home and become superheroes, using the powers they inherited from their parents. Gertrude Yorkes’s parents are time travelers who genetically altered a small dinosaur to be telepathically linked with their daughter. They intended it to be her inheritance, but she stumbles across it early when the teens go on the run. Being a classic movie buff, Gertrude names herself Arsenic and her pet dinosaur Old Lace, after the 1944 film, Arsenic and Old Lace.
