GEOFF JOHNS
Brian here for a moment. I asked Green Lantern writer Geoff Johns his choices for the most iconic Green Lantern covers. Here is what he suggested, along with some notes from me as to who did the artwork and the significance of a particular cover.
1 Showcase #22 (Gil Kane). First appearance of Hal Jordan.
2 Green Lantern (2nd Series) #52 (Gil Kane and Murphy Anderson).
3 Green Lantern (2nd Series) #76 (Neal Adams). Beginning of the Green Lantern/Green Arrow series of team-ups by Denny O’Neil and Neal Adams.
4 Green Lantern (2nd Series) #85 (Neal Adams). Johns notes that this is more known as a Green Arrow cover, but it was in an issue of Green Lantern!
5 Green Lantern (2nd Series) #127 (Brian Bolland). The first time Hal wore more than one ring.
6 Tales of the Green Lantern Corps #1 (Brian Bolland). This one has been homaged a number of times, including most notably on the cover of Green Lantern #200 by Walter Simonson.
7 Green Lantern (3rd Series) #49 (Darryl Banks and Romeo Tanghal). This was part of “Emerald Twilight,” when Hal Jordan seemingly went insane and began killing other Green Lanterns.
8 Green Lantern (4th Series) #29 (Ivan Reis). The first part of the “Secret Origin” story that was essentially the basis for the 2011 Green Lantern film.
9 Green Lantern (4th Series) #39 (Ivan Reis and Oclair Albert). Introduction of the Orange Lantern, Larfleeze.
After first working as Richard Donner’s assistant for four years, Geoff Johns began to transition into a full-time comic book writer around 2000. He opened up with a critically acclaimed five-year run on the The Flash. Since then, he has quickly become one of the most popular and prolific comics writers today, working on such titles as a highly successful reimagining of Green Lantern, Action Comics (cowritten with Richard Donner), Teen Titans, Justice Society of America, and Infinite. Geoff has received numerous awards for his comic book writing. Geoff has also written some acclaimed episodes for the TV series Smallville. In 2010 Geoff was appointed chief creative officer of DC Entertainment. In addition to writing the best-selling Blackest Night series, he is a consultant on DC film properties, including Green Lantern, starring Ryan Reynolds.
