Jerry Seinfeld is a renowned fan of Superman and often made references in episodes of his eponymous show. In fact, for much of the series, there is either a Superman figurine visible on Jerry’s stereo in his apartment or a Superman magnet on Jerry’s refrigerator. However, there were many more notable Superman references on the show. Here are five of the best ones.
“The Bizarro Jerry.” This is probably the most elaborate Superman reference, episode-wise. Elaine is dating a guy named Kevin who has two friends who are very similar in appearance to George and Kramer but the opposite in personality. Kevin and his friends are actually nice to one another. Kevin’s Kramer even brings Kevin groceries (while Kramer always takes food from Jerry’s refrigerator). Jerry remarks that Kevin is the Bizarro Jerry, just like Superman’s complete opposite was named Bizarro. Later in the episode, we even see that Kevin has a Bizarro figurine on his stereo!
“The Race.” In this episode, Jerry is dating a woman named Lois, and he continually gets a kick out of referring to her like Superman refers to Lois in the Superman films. Lois’s boss went to high school with Jerry and thinks Jerry cheated him in a race back in the day, so he insists that they race again or he will fire Lois (and if Jerry wins, Lois will get a free vacation to Hawaii). Jerry decides he must “save” Lois by racing the guy. Jerry inadvertently cheats once again and wins (while the theme from Superman plays in the background). Lois asks him, “So will you come to Hawaii with me, Jerry?” Jerry responds, “Maybe I will, Lois. Maybe I will,” and then winks to the camera, just like Superman.
“The Secret Code.” A subtle but excellent reference. In this episode, viewers learn that Jerry’s PIN for the ATM is Jor-El, the name of Superman’s father.
“The Invitations.” In a demonstration of why Jerry and his new girlfriend, Jeanine, are perfect for each other, they are shown reading Superboy and Supergirl comics side by side.
“The Lip Reader.” Jerry is dating a deaf woman who can read lips. He and George decide to use it to their benefit. George compares this to having Superman for a friend, and Jerry agrees, saying it’s like having X-ray vision.
