Lively Campo Santo Margherita is at the heart of the sestiere of Dorsoduro. The square bustles with activity, particularly in the morning, when the market stalls are open, and in the evening when it is the haunt of students from nearby Ca’ Foscari, now part of the University of Venice. The surrounding streets contain several spectacular buildings, most notably Ca’ Rezzonico and the Scuola Grande dei Carmini, which has decorations by Tiepolo. Of the area’s waterways, the delightful Rio San Barnaba is best appreciated from the Ponte dei Pugni, near the barge selling fruit and vegetables – itself a time-honoured Venetian sight. To discover the quieter part of the sestiere, travel east of the Peggy Guggenheim Collection for shaded squares and picturesque residences.

Did You Know?

Dorsoduro is built on solid subsoil, unlike much of Venice. This accounts for its name, meaning “hard backbone”.
