STITCH TUTORIAL:
THE GRANNY STRIPE

The granny stripe is a version of the granny square and is worked in rows. It uses the same pattern motif of three treble groups separated by a chain stitch, but it has no corners. It is equally versatile and can be used to make a huge variety of projects. This pattern is very useful when you need to work to a set measurement as it can be made as long or short as needed.

CHART

Well, this all looks a little familiar, doesn’t it? There’s those groups of three treble crochet stitches, separated by a chain stitch again. This time, the pattern doesn’t turn any corners; it just keeps going and going and going in rows.

Foundations chain: ch 15

Row 1: (ch 1) dc 15

Row 2: ch 4, turn (counts as tr and ch 1), 3tr in 8th stitch from hook, *ch 1, sk 3 sts, 3tr in next st* repeat across. When there are three stitches left, ch 1, sk 2 sts and tr 1 in the final st.

1. For this row, make a chain of four, turn and then put three treble crochets in the eighth stitch from your hook.

2. Chain one, skip three stitches and put three treble crochets in the next stitch.

3. This pattern repeats across until you have only three stitches left. Don’t worry, you haven’t made a mistake, you just need to chain one and put one treble crochet in the very last stitch.

Row 3: ch 3, turn (counts as tr), 2tr in ch-1 space, *ch 1, 3tr in ch-1 space* repeat across.

1. Make the treble crochet groups in each chain-one space and make a single chain stitch between them.

Row 4: ch 4, turn (counts as tr and ch 1), 3tr in 1st ch-1 space, *ch 1, 3tr in next ch-1 space* repeat across. At the end of the row, ch 1 and tr 1 in the final st.

1. For this row, chain four again and make your first group of three treble crochets into the first chain-one space. Chain one and make the next treble crochet groups in the following chain-one space. Repeat along the row. When you’ve run out of chain-one spaces, chain one and put one treble crochet in the final stitch.

Rows 5 onwards: repeat rows 3 and 4 alternately.

If you’re ready for the next project, then let’s crack on! It’s more granny striping, but with a twist…
