Delilah closed her eyes and fell into a deep sleep. She was elated that her daughter was finally safe, at least from the harsh rulings of gods. Kourosh, on the other hand, was an entirely different story.
Bonded to her protector for life, which meant the safety of the seven virtues, were secure. The human world would be safe for many centuries to come. Zeus could climb upon his chariot and head back to Olympus to be a nuisance to his own people.
Tithoes’s plan had worked. So, why was there a nagging feeling that something was not right? Nothing was ever that easy when the gods were involved. Her fears came to light the moment Tithoes appeared before her.
“Excellent work, Delilah; we have won the first battle. You can take comfort in knowing that you have done all you could.”
Even in sleep, Delilah could feel the implication behind his coded words. The war against Kourosh would never be over as long as he was still alive. She instinctively knew that.
“Your work is done,” Tithoes, said dismissively.
Delilah was much too cunning herself to take anything at face value. She knew a brushoff when she felt it.
The hairs on the back of her neck were standing straight up. That had to mean something. He may as well have given her a confirmation number to confirm that he was up to no good. She decided to put Tithoes to a test.
“I am prepared to do more. Use me.”
“I am sure that you are, but this is where you must have faith. Only Kourosh and can work out their differences. You must step out of the way and let whatever happens happen.”
A blanket of panic covered Delilah and settled deep into her bones. Had the god cleverly betrayed her, telling her to have faith and to step out of the way to let whatever happens simply happen? What was that all about? Surely, Tithoes knew the origin of Kourosh. The man knew nothing about working out differences in a peaceful way. He was a monster of destruction and would never give up without a bloody fight or until everything was destroyed. Delilah would never step out of the way to watch as Kourosh destroyed the world because he couldn’t have his favorite toy.
“The humans don’t stand a chance. He will kill them all without my help.”
“I am the sovereign god that determines destiny, not you.” He said with a hint of irritation in his tone. “It is my job to control the outcome of the war against good and evil.”
“Of course you are, but this war against good and evil involves my daughter,” She yelled.
“Sadly it does. But which one is good and which is evil.”
No! Delilah screamed out loud waking herself from her sleep. Who was good and who was evil, she mused. Now that she thought about it, she didn’t have a clue. Both men were vampires, both had the ability to undo the universe, and both loved her daughter. Had she made the right choice picking Roman as her protector, or had she been played by Tithoes to help create her daughter’s destiny, and would the outcome be favorable?
Delilah knew how the gods worked in mysterious ways. Keeping her on edge, wondering and praying to them for one thing or another. Now she was wondering if Tithoes was working with Horus and Zeus to seal Desiree’s fate.
Delilah threw back the covers on her bed and stepped onto the cold floor consumed with worry once again. Had she made the wrong choice choosing Roman over Kourosh for her daughter, she asked herself as she headed out onto the balcony? Even as a spirit, she was rattled with uncertainty and doubt. If not in death then when would she be able to rest in peace?
As the sun came up over the horizon and slowly set, Delilah called upon the goddesses for the right answer. The advice was unanimous. Have faith and trust in divine providence. Use it as a source of comfort.
It wasn’t that Delilah didn’t have faith in the gods because she did. It was just that her fears blinded her faith, which now caused her to question not only Tithoes, but also everything.
Thank the gods she knew Fate. Surely, she would have the answers to her many questions. Perhaps she could help her restore her faith before she made another wrong choice.
