Chapter 1: Hallowing and Warding

Shortest Hammer Hallowing

Hammer within,
Hammer without,
hallow our holy stead;
bane of etins,
banish evil:
watch and ward our stead.

Hammer in the North,
hallow our stead

Fire and Ice Warding

I call on the Fire
that fiercely burns,
a blazing brand
that’s born of Muspell;
with primal power
I prepare this stead
and hold it holy
for helpful wights.

I call on the Ice
that’s always cold,
a freezing flow
that’s formed in Nifl;
with primal power
I prepare this stead
and hold it holy
for helpful wights.

Four Dwarves Warding

Hail to Norðri,
your name we call;
hallow here now
our holy stead.
Hail to Austri,
answer our call;
hallow here now
our holy stead.

Hail to Suðri,
sincerely we call;
hallow here now
our holy stead.
Hail to Vestri,
with vigor we call;
hallow here now
our holy stead.

Unattested Dwarves Addition

Hail to Uppi,
eagerly we call;
hallow here now
our holy stead.
Hail to Niðri,
with need we call;
hallow here now
our holy stead.

Short Water Warding

I sprinkle water
— a splash from the well —
to hallow and hold
our holy stead;
the power of Wyrd
will ward us now
and keep secure
our kindred work.

Extended Water Warding

From the Well of Hvergelmir,
this water I sprinkle
to hallow and hold
our holy stead.
That primal power
makes pure this realm;
for working our will,
well it cleanses.

From the Well of Mímir,
this water I sprinkle
to hallow and hold
our holy stead.
The might and main
of memory and wisdom
is boon and blessing
to the best of wights.

From the Well of Urð,
this water I sprinkle
to hallow and hold
our holy stead.
The workings of Wyrd
will ward us now
and keep secure
our kindred work.

Spear Warding

This gar guards now
our garth tonight;
it hallows and holds
our holy stead.
The weapon wards
by will this realm
and keeps secure
our kindred work.

Other Spear Warding

With spear, I circle
and bespell this stead
for boons and blessings
from the best of wights.
By steel is made
a state that’s holy
and warded well
for our work today.

Fire Warding

This brightly burning
and blazing fire
hallows and holds
our holy stead.
These boundaries meet
by brand are marked
and kept secure
for our kindred work.

Sword Warding

A battle-icicle
I brandish now
to hallow and hold
this holy stead.
By steel is made
a state of welcome
for boons and blessings
from the best of wights.

Other Sword Warding

With sword, I circle
this site of work
and mark with main
its mighty boundaries.
By strength of steel,
this stead is blessed
and hallowed with will
for helpful wights.

Mead Warding

Through words and will
my wode is stirred;
with skaldic skill
I scour this realm.
The might and main
of the mead Óðrœrir
hallows and holds
this holy stead.

Nine Worlds and Elements Hallowing

I hallow here now
this holy stead
by rightly naming
the realms and elements,
for our work is warded
by their wealful order.
To the North is Niflheim
and its needful Ice.

To the South is Muspellsheim
and its searing Fire.
To the West is Vanaheim
and its vigorous Yeast.
To the East is Jötunheim
and its acid Venom.
Above is Ljósálfheim
and its lofty Air.

Below is Svartálfheim
and its solid Iron.
Highest is Asgard
and its holy Salt.
Lowest is Hel
and its liquid Water.
In the middle is Midgard
and its mighty Earth.

The realms and elements
are rightfully ordered,
as Óðinn deemed
in elder days.
I’ve recalled creation,
thus keeping its power
rightfully present
in our ritual today.

Concluding Statement

Now is hallowed
our holy stead
for the work of weal
that well we start.
By might and main,
we’re meetly warded
against the ways
and wights unholy.
