Chapter Thirty-seven

THE DESK PHONE BUZZED, and I hurried down the hall to answer. “Smart Detective Agency.”

“Um, I need to talk to Margaretta Stilson, please.” The woman sounded uncomfortable.

“She isn’t in today. I can take a message or have her call you.”

“I guess it doesn’t matter who I tell. This is Karen Yates. She asked me about Steve Deline the other day, and she said I should call if I remembered anything more. So Drew and I were talking last night and we remembered this Corina Somebody who was pretty mad when she found out Steve was just messing with her about getting married.”

“How far did he let it go?”

“I heard she sent out save-the-date messages to her family back in Cleveland.”

“Do you recall Corina’s last name?”

“No, but she came to town with some construction crew last year. They spent the summer on a project at the state campground. Steve and Corina got together and went at it hot and heavy for a while. We all thought she should have seen it coming, but I guess she didn’t know Steve like we did.”

“She was angry when she realized he wasn’t serious?”

“That’s what I heard. The company left town, so I never actually saw her after they broke up.”

“Thank you for the information, Mrs. Yates.”

“You should find her. I didn’t know her very well, but she seemed like the type that could hold a grudge.”

“Like your friend Lila?”

“No. Lila does stuff she shouldn’t, but she wouldn’t kill anybody, and for sure not Steve. She really loved the guy.”
