This appendix provides you with information on the contents of the CD that accompanies this book. For the latest and greatest information, please refer to the ReadMe file located at the root of the CD.
This appendix provides information on the following topics:
• System Requirements
• Using the CD
• Files and software on the CD
• Troubleshooting
Make sure that your computer meets the minimum system requirements listed in this section. If your computer doesn’t match up to most of these requirements, you may have a problem using the contents of the CD.
• Windows Vista, Windows XP, or Windows 2000 or later. Microsoft Office 2007only works with these operating systems.
• A PC with a fast processor running at 500 MHz or faster (800 MHz for Windows Vista).
• At least 256MB of total RAM installed on your computer (512MB RAM for Windows Vista). For best performance, we recommend a minimum of 512MB for all versions of Windows.
• 2GB of free disk space (for installation of Microsoft Office 2007).
• A CD-ROM drive.
To install the items from the CD to your hard drive, follow these steps:
1. Insert the CD into your computer’s CD-ROM drive.
A window appears displaying the License Agreement.
2. Press Accept to continue.
The following sections provide more details about the software and other materials available on the CD.
The CD includes a completed Access Auto Auctions database in two formats:
• Split Database: Consisting of two different files: AccessAutoAuctions.accdb and AccessAutoAuctionsData.accdb. Both of these files should be installed to the C:\Access 2007 Bible folder on your computer.
• Single File Database: The entire Access Auto Auctions example (user interface, queries, code, and data) may be found in AccessAutoAuctions_SingleFile.accdb. You may find it somewhat simpler to use this example, particularly when working with table design issues. Because the tables are contained within the same file as the rest of the application, Access allows you to make whatever changes you wish to the tables and other data structures without opening an additional database file.
In the event that you encounter problems with the split database examples, it is possible that the table linkages are broken. The table links can be broken by moving either the AccessAutoAuctions.accdb file or the AccessAutoAuctionsData.accdb file to a different location than the Access 2007 Bible folder on your C: drive.
If the table linkages appear to be broken, please consult the "Viewing or changing information for linked tables" section in Chapter 16 for instructions on using the Linked Table Manager to restore the broken linkages.
These files will be installed into a directory named Access 2007 Bible, or you can choose any directory in which to install these files. Below this directory will be 41 subdirectories named Chapter_01, Chapter_02, and so on through Chapter_41. Each subdirectory contains all of the files necessary to follow the examples in the corresponding chapter.
A few chapters have no examples, and do not have a corresponding folder on the book’s CD. Most chapters contain a single Access 2007 database file with an .accdb extension, such as Chapter30.accdb, while some folders contain multiple Access database files and auxiliary files used for the chapter’s examples.
Also, a few chapters include Access 2000–format .mdb data files to demonstrate Access 2007 features that are only supported in the older database file formats.
Many chapters also use additional database files, graphics, document files, or help files as found in each chapter subdirectory and explained at the beginning of each chapter.
The complete text of the book you hold in your hands is provided on the CD in Adobe’s Portable Document Format (PDF). You can read and quickly search the content of this PDF file by using Adobe’s Acrobat Reader, also included on the CD.
If you have difficulty installing or using any of the materials on the companion CD, try the following solutions:
• Turn off any antivirus software that you may have running. Installers sometimes mimic virus activity and can make your computer incorrectly believe that it is being infected by a virus. (Be sure to turn the antivirus software back on later.)
• Close all running programs. The more programs you’re running, the less memory is available to other programs. Installers also typically update files and programs; if you keep other programs running, installation may not work properly.
• Reference the ReadMe: Please refer to the ReadMe file located at the root of the CD-ROM for the latest product information at the time of publication.
