May 25, Saturday
When I walked to the market this morning I had some sharp pains that made me catch my breath, and now that I’m home they seem to be more regular. Ana is here with me and the pains are about twenty minutes apart.
“Eva, it’s important for you to rest. It will be hours before things really get going.”
Ana has two kids already, so she can be the expert even though I’m the older sister. I smile to myself. “Yes, Ana, I know you’re right. Thank you for being here.”
“Of course, Eva. Sónia and I will be with you the whole time. I sent João from church to let Dona Severina know the baby is getting ready to arrive. He was worried, poor thing—even though he’s only twelve he’s very protective of his oldest sister.”
The pains aren’t bad yet, but I know it’s still early. I recline on the bed and look around the room. I’m nervous but peaceful. Everything is ready, all the baby clothes clean, folded and put away. Lorival is almost three so his crib is now for the new baby. Fresh sheets, cloths and basins for hot water are all stacked in the kitchen. I close my eyes between pains and let my body relax. Dona Severina will be here soon.
