June 10, Friday
“Carlos! My sweet son, it’s so good to see you!” He’s tall and handsome and so like his father, I look at him in wonder.
Carlos gives me a hug. “Mãe, I miss you too. I’m so glad to be here for Kai’s high-school graduation.”
“The ceremony is tonight, but the big celebration is on Monday, with family coming from Picuí and Brasília. We’ll have a big dinner in the restaurant.”
“How’s Michael?”
“He’s fine; down in the kitchen making sure everything is on track for tonight’s service. We won’t be back up here until late tonight, but you don’t have to wait up for us, we can talk tomorrow.”
“That’s fine, Mom. I’ll take a nap. Cirlene made sure I have everything I need in the guest room.”
“Is everything good at work?”
“Absolutely. My apprenticeship with Lina Bo Bardi doesn’t pay as much as other firms would, but she has a unique vision of ‘architecture for everyone.’ And women architects are rare. She’s a strong woman, like my mom.” He smiles and hugs me again.
“Make yourself at home, son. I’m just going to jump in the shower and head down to get ready for tonight.”
“Mom?”
I turn to look at Carlos.
“I’m so proud of you, Mom.”
