ACKNOWLEDGMENTS

My twin brothers, Donald and Darrel, helped me recall many of the stories I’ve included in this book. Occasionally we didn’t agree on some of the details—a good reason to have just two siblings, as you can go with a vote of two out of three when disagreement occurs. A case in point: in the Thanksgiving story, Darrel insists that the dog in the story was named Sport. Donald and I remember him as Ralph.

As is true of all my books, my wife, Ruth, read every word of every chapter and made many suggestions for improvement. And of course Kate Thompson, with an eagle eye, ferreted out every last error, pushed me to explain when I assumed people would know something (everyone knows a .22 rifle is illegal for deer hunting, right?), and generally made my sometimes clunky prose readable. A big thank-you to all.
