THOSE WHO KNOW ABOUT IT

Acknowledgments

When a book has been living and growing and changing for over twenty-five years, the list of those who have generously contributed to that book becomes almost as long as those years. Given how generous coffee professionals have been with their time and information, the following list is, if anything, a short and stingy one.

Some cited here (Jim Reynolds and George Howell especially) deserve a gigantic gold star for having heard me out and answered my questions over almost every year of those twenty-five. Others were intensely helpful for the first edition of this book (Alfred Peet, Milt Mountanos, Thomas Cara, the late James Hardcastle), or for the latest (Micheal Glenister, Kevin Knox, Don Holly), or for those editions in between (Bob Barker, Michael Sivitz, Mark Mountanos, Kevin Sinnott, and many, many others). But everyone on the list has contributed something important along the way.

As long as it is, this list leaves out two important category of individuals: those in coffee countries who were not involved directly in coffee but helped me get to it, and those who have helped me write about it better by contributing their editorial skills and leadership to an increasingly sophisticated culture of coffee communication. In the coffee travel category, I have been helped by so many so well that I can only list a few: Tom Lyons, Mohammed Saif, and Mohamad Sheiban (Yemen), Pilar Masch (Guatemala), and Judy Barral (Ethiopia). As for those who have helped build a community of coffee communication: Linda Yoshin (coffeereview.com), the redoubtable Jane McCabe (Tea & Coffee Trade Journal), Michael Segal (Coffee & Cocoa International), Ward Barbee and Rivers Janssen (Fresh Cup Magazine), Roger Sandon (Café Ole magazine), Susan Bonne (Coffee Journal), Laura Gorman (Gourmet Retailer magazine), Suzanne Brown (SJB Associates), Sue Gillerlain (Specialty Coffee Retailer magazine), Mike Ferguson (Specialty Coffee Association of America), Jamie Utendorf, Susie Spindler (SNS Communications), Kate LaPoint, my wonderful agents Claudia Menza and Richard Derus, my longtime illustrator-colleague Martha Wasik, the editors of past editions of this book, Jackie Killeen and Annette Gooch, and current editors Keith Kahla and Teresa Theophano of St. Martin’s Press.

My deepest gratitude to:
