THREE LARGE MALES AND one skinny guy walked toward Amethyst and Walter. All of them smelled of sweat and body odor making Amethyst’s nose scrunch up.

“Tell Klaus we will fill our quota early with these two!” one of the large hunters with long blonde hair yelled at the scrawny one. He, in turn, pulled out his phone and typed on the screen.

They inched toward Walter and Amethyst. Panic raced through her system. She had heard of hunters before from Maria but she didn’t know if she would be able to kill one.

“I’d stop right there and walk away.” Walter’s voice held more power than before.

“Why should we walk? You’re outnumbered and ripe for the picking.” The blonde rubbed his hands together. Amethyst’s stomach turned while her wolf paced in her mind waiting to strike. Walter growled low and moved his hand out in front of him.

“Dolor,” Walter spoke low and the blonde’s legs buckled and he screamed out in pain. Amethyst stared at the man as his body shook, his eyes wide with fear.

“What the hell?” the skinny one yelled, a newer scent filled Amethyst’s nose and she guessed the odor of fear perfumed the air. Her nose scrunched up again but her wolf pushed against the edge as the man screamed in pain.

“Like I said, you should walk away.” Once again Walter’s strength shocked Amethyst. Yes, he’s a bad ass but damn. Amethyst looked at Walter, anger glowed strongly in her mate’s eyes. Her wolf was happy to have him on her side.

“You’re a fucking freak. How did you do that?” The blonde finally managed to gain a steady breath and glared at Walter.

“You’re messing with a fucking witch, you inbred hick. Also, threating my mate isn’t a great idea either.” Walter clenched his fists at his sides.

Amethyst wanted to curse at the damn universe for the need to go on a run today. If they had been here hours earlier or even an hour later, the hunters might have never crossed their paths. Dread rolled in the pit of her stomach. They were looking for werewolves. What if they had attacked Maria, who’s pregnant? The idea terrified her to no end.

“Well, you and your mate will help us get higher in the Devil Hunter’s rank so we have to kill you.” The blonde shrugged and stood on slightly shaky legs.

After a few more steps they would have the advantage to attack without warning but Amethyst didn’t want to back up and give them more leverage. Her wolf clawed at Amethyst’s barrier, she wanted to get out and fight these hunters. Images of ripping the blonde to shreds filled her mind but fear of dying kept Amethyst’s barrier up.

I’m not strong enough, damn it!

A branch snapped off to the right and she turned to find a male and a female approaching them.

“Walter?” the male with black hair asked. The female’s long brown hair fluttered in the breeze and her smile faded into a worried line.

“Devin. Call Derrick,” Walter yelled.

“Perfect, more wolves to kill. We will each have one.” The guy with a large scar across his face smiled, making his face contort.

“Why?” Devin yelled. Amethyst turned just in time for the bruised guy to jump toward her. Amethyst tried to move out of the way but he knocked her down.

“Fuck,” someone yelled, and all hell broke loose in the valley. A fist connected with Amethyst’s face making her dizzy. Before another blow came down, the weight of his body was lifted off her. Amethyst opened her eyes to find bruised guy flying into the skinny guy.

“Emily, can you help her?” Devin motioned toward Amethyst and Emily nodded. She moved closer and helped Amethyst into a sitting position. Amethyst rubbed the back of her head and rolled her shoulders.

“Are you okay?” Emily asked.

“Yeah.” Amethyst shook her head and looked at Devin and Walter throwing two of the guys together. Walter’s left hand shook at his side.

“Do you know magic?” Amethyst turned to Emily. The woman’s brown eyes bulged.

“No, I’m human.” Emily shook her head frantically. The eclipse hit totality a few seconds ago, putting them in a darkened state. They weren’t in total darkness like Amethyst suspected would happen.

“Then stay back.” Amethyst focused on her wolf and let her come out. After what felt like minutes her wolf took over and hair covered her body. Power and strength filled her bones, giving her a sense of indestructibility. At least that’s how her flipping wolf felt but Amethyst knew better.

She leaped into action, attacking the skinny guy and knocking him to the ground. Baring her teeth, she wrapped her strong jaw around the male’s arm and pulled hard. Bone snapped under the force and blood filled her mouth. A foot collided with her gut making her gasp for air and let go of the arm. She turned to find one of the hunters looming over her.

A growl left her lips, her leg muscles bunched, ready to pounce.

“Don’t you know anything about hunters? I take an anti-bite pill to prevent the change, you freak,” he said before swinging at her again, this time Amethyst dodged it with ease. “You’re all mine.”

Walter’s shaking body caught Amethyst’s focus, and the guy took advantage of it, connecting his fist with her snout. Fuck, that hurt. A whimper of pain left her mouth before she managed to stop it. Her head ached from the hit but she kept her focus. Amethyst lurched for the guy’s right arm, his dominant side and with some luck caught it in her mouth. A yell of pain rang in her ear as she clamped down, her sharp teeth dug into his flesh.

“Don’t you turn me into one of you.” He punched at her with his less effective side and managed to get her leg but not with enough force to hurt too badly. The hunter stumbled back onto his ass.

Amethyst let go of his arm and managed to go for his throat this time. With all the blood loss he wasn’t quick enough to block her. She clamped down on his windpipe and pulled away. A gurgling noise met her ears, making her stomach roll.

What did I just do? Her brain scrambled to come to terms with it until a scream from Emily knocked her back into reality. Devin had a hunter looming over him and a knife in hunter’s left hand.

Amethyst ran for the hunter on Devin. Her teeth flared out and made contact with flesh. Shit, wrong guy! Devin screamed. Quickly, she let go and knocked the hunter off Devin.

“Walter, she bit me.” Devin’s pained voice broke Amethyst’s focus on her attack and the hunter pushed her off. She regained her standing. The other brunet guy glared at Amethyst but this time she knew exactly what to do. She knocked him down with the full force of her body and pulled out his windpipe like the first guy. When he finally stopped moving, she moved away. The moon began to reveal the sun signaling the end of the solar eclipse.

Devin’s body rolled around in pain. Oh, crap he’s changing or dying.
