Subplots

A SUBPLOT IS a thematically related exploration of a minor part of the protagonist’s personality or a related aspect of theme. It’s a “miniature” plot that features a sideline story. As such, subplots are vital for providing both contrast within the plot (they give readers a “break” from the main plot) and for introducing character depth via situations that would be off-limits in the main part of the plot. Most subplots will need to be introduced within the first half of the book, so they can come into full flower in the Second Act.

Exercise: Consider what subplots you will introduce in the first half of your book. Write a possible subplot for each of the following categories.
