Hat

Ribbing

Row 1:

A: With charcoal and F hook, ch 10, sk first ch, *insert hook in next ch, yo, pull lp through (leave lp on hook), rep from * across (10 lps on hook);

B: turn hook 180 degrees so back of work is facing, push lps to opposite end of hook, pull Picasso through 1 lp on hook, with Picasso, [yo, pull through 2 lps on hook] across until 1 lp rem on hook.

Note: Last lp on hook counts as first st of next row.

Row 2:

A: Sk first vertical bar, with Picasso, TKS (see Stitch Glossary on page 31) across (10 lps on hook);

B: turn hook 180 degrees, push lps to opposite end of hook, pull charcoal through 1 lp on hook, with charcoal, [yo, pull through 2 lps on hook] across until 1 lp rem on hook.

Row 3:

A: Sk first vertical bar, with charcoal, TKS across (10 lps on hook);

B: turn hook 180 degrees, push lps to opposite end of hook, pull Picasso through 1 lp on hook, with Picasso, [yo, pull through 2 lps on hook] across until 1 lp rem on hook.

Rows 4–143: [Rep rows 2 and 3 alternately] 71 times.

Row 144: Rep row 2. At end of row, fasten off Picasso.

Row 145: Sk first vertical bar, with charcoal, working as for TKS, sl st in each st across. Fasten off.

With tapestry needle, without twisting Ribbing, sew row 1 to row 145.

Body

Note: Since Body is worked in the round, you will need to complete 2 or more “passes” of picking up lps in order to make it all the way around. The instructions state total number of sts for each rnd, but work is completed in sections in order to make it around (see page 5). Pulling up lps is always done with charcoal, and closing lps is always done with Picasso.

Rnd 1:

A: With charcoal and size I hook, pick up lps in edge of each row of Ribbing (144 lps on hook);

B: turn hook 180 degrees so back of work is facing, push lps to opposite end of hook, pull Picasso through 1 lp on hook, with Picasso, [yo, pull through 2 lps on hook] across until 1 lp rem on hook.

Note: When closing sts in 2 or more “passes,” always remember to leave last 3 or 4 sts on hook to maintain stability of the lps.

Rnd 2:

A: Bring first st close to last st, TSS (see Stitch Glossary on page 31) in each st around;

Note: Place st marker in first st; move marker up as work progresses.

B: turn hook 180 degrees, push lps to opposite end of hook, [yo, pull through 2 lps on hook] around.

Rnds 3–13: Rep rnd 2.

Rnd 14:

Fasten off both yarns, leaving an 8-inch length of charcoal.

Bow

Rows 1–35: Rep rows 1–35 of Ribbing.

Row 36: Rep row 2 of Ribbing.

Row 37: Sk first vertical bar, with charcoal, working as for TKS, sl st in each st across. Fasten off.

Finishing

Using tapestry needle, weave 8-inch length of charcoal through top stitches of Hat. Pull to cinch top of Hat tog and secure end. Weave in ends.

Wind a 15-inch strand of charcoal around center of Bow and secure end.

With charcoal, sew Bow to Hat.
